The Things We Do
Miss Ruby’s is a “home and family based” literacy program which is a part of the nationwide Parent-Child Home program. Two and three-year-old children will spend two years in the program which brings together parent/caregiver , child and a home visitor two times a week during the school year.
The visitor’s bring developmentally appropriate books and toys for the children and mentor the parents. Parents are taught how to read, talk and play with their children to improve their vocabularies and get them ready for kindergarten.
80% of all students in the program graduate from high school which far exceeds the average in Georgetown County.
The program is named after the beloved teacher at Baskervill who motivated so many “at risk” kids during the time the school served the community.
Miss Ruby’s began in 2003 and is supported by the United Way and is part of the club’s Young Children Priority One Committee. For more information go to:

The third Annual KidsFest will take place in Georgetown on Saturday May 10,2008. It will begin with a Parade at 10 a.m. starting on Front Street and moving down to East Bay Park for the day-long event. The parade is to support Drug & Alcohol Awareness throughout Georgetown County. Up to 4000 kids are expected to be on hand for food and fun activities from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. And it‘s all free.
We will again be part of this event sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department, Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge, School District and Recreation & Leisure Services Dept. The first year we sponsored a Car Seat Safety Check with Midway Fire and it was moderately successful. In year two we became a member of the planning committee and were approved for the Kiwanis Kids Stage.
The Kiwanis Kids Stage will feature entertainment by young people throughout the day. Last year the park stage was deemed unsafe and was replaced by a portable stage. We hope that we can be instrumental in building another permanent stage facility and have already received support from the MI Elks Lodge.
Major funding for the event comes from the county and school district but other club’s and organizations will be asked to contribute to offset costs of the event and support the Task Force.
We contributed $150 last year and have budgeted $500 this year.
Volunteers will be needed to help out on May 10. See Don T for more info.

"WHALE" (We Have a Little Emergency)
The Kiwanis Club of Pawley’s Island, in cooperation with the Georgetown Police Department, is sponsoring a child safety program known as “WHALE”. (We Have A Little Emergency). The “Whale” program provides identification stickers for parents with children still using car seats. The identification stickers attach to the back of the car seat and contain emergency contact information as well as medical history data about the child. This gives emergency responders valuable information should the vehicle be involved in an accident and adult passengers are unable to provide needed information. Each packet contains an information sticker for the back of the car seat, “WHALE” identification stickers for the outside of the seat and window decals to alert emergency workers to the information sticker on the car seat. To obtain a “WHALE” packet and stickers for your child seat, contact the Georgetown Police Department Community Services Section at 545-4323, or come by the Georgetown Police Department at 2222 Highmarket St. in Georgetown.
This is just one of the agencies we work with including First Steps, Hospital System, Day Care Centers, Fire Departments, etc
